O Grupo de Pesquisa em Telecomunicações Sem Fio (GTEL) da Universidade Federal do Ceará (UFC) inicia a execução de dois novos projetos de pesquisa em parceria com a multinacional das telecomunicações ERICSSON. A iniciativa envolve 20 pesquisadores da UFC e terá duração de 24 meses. A investigação se dá em duas linhas de pesquisa que se aplicam à tecnologia 5G do tipo New Radio, atualmente em fase de padronização e com perspectiva de inicio de operação comercial em alguns países em 2019. Na primeira linha de pesquisa, técnicas de inteligência artificial serão empregadas para uma operação eficiente das redes 5G buscando prover altos níveis de qualidade no serviço de banda larga móvel. Tais melhorias deverão se traduzir em maior taxa de transferência de dados (download e upload) e menor atraso na comunicação com os servidores de conteúdo. A segunda linha de pesquisa investiga a comunicação envolvendo veículos. No contexto da internet das coisas, veículos de passeio, de transporte de pessoas e de carga, terão conectividade nativa. As aplicações da comunicação destes veículos tanto entre si como com a infraestrutura viária são variadas. Como exemplos pode-se citar a possibilidade de prevenir acidentes usando a comunicação de mensagens de emergência e a formação automática de comboios. A parceria entre o GTEL e a ERICSSON existe há quase 20 anos e produziu dezenas de patentes além de ter gerado um conjunto de publicações científicas citadas mais de 1000 vezes*. Em seu conjunto, esses resultados tem contribuído para a melhoria da qualidade e capacidade dos sistemas de comunicação móvel celular de terceira, quarta e, agora, quinta gerações.
[English Version] GTEL and ERICSSON start research projects for the evolution of 5G technology
The Wireless Telecommunications Research Group (GTEL) of the Federal University of Ceará (UFC) starts implementing two new research projects in partnership with telecommunications multinational ERICSSON. The initiative involves 20 UFC researchers and wil last 24 months. The research is conducted in two lines of research tha apply to the New Radio type 5G technology, currently in the standardization phase and with prospecto f comercial start-up in some countries in 2019. In the first line of research, artificial intelligence techniques will be employed for the eficiente operation of 5G networks seeking to provide high levels of quality in the mobile broadband service. Such improvements should translate into higher data transfer rates (download and upload) and less delay in communicating with contente servers. The second line of research investigates communication involving vehicles. In the contexto of the internet of things, passenger vehicles, public transportation and cargo, will have native connectivity. The applications of the communication of these vehicles with each other and with the road infrastructure are varied. Examples are the possibility of preventing acidentes using emergency message communication and automatic convoy formation. The partnership between GTEL and ERICSSON has existed for almost 20 years and has produced dozens of patentes and generated a body of scientific literature with more than 1000 citations*. Taken together, these resultshave contributed to the improvement of the quality and capacity of third, fourth and now fifth generation cellular communication systems.
